Visit Buffered

Looking for a good VPN?  You might be in the right place.  Buffered are an up-and-comer and an innovator who place a lot of concern on privacy and security.  They offer great service at a reasonable price and they don't mind P2P file-sharing.

Unfortunately, they don't accept Bitcoin and although their customer support is good, it's certainly not the best.  They operate out of Hungary, so you don't have to worry too much about the claws of the US authorities running through your online indiscretions.

They look like a company that's going to continue to grow and bring big things to the table. Read on for our full Buffered VPN review.

Buffered Review

One of the assets of Buffered is that they are based in Hungary.  This means that they are away from US and UK laws. Their service can find open ports and use them as the OpenVPN port, so it can sometimes bypass Wi-Fi password protected areas.

They are a fast growing company with servers available in 30 countries and they keep trying to innovate with their products and services.  They also offer three simultaneous connections.

Their website is nice and easy to use.  It has all of the standard features that you would expect , a clean functionality and a nice modern look.

Plans and Pricing

There's nothing too confusing about Buffered's pricing.  For month-to-month subscriptions, it'll cost you $12.99.  If you sign up for six months, you get a 23% saving, working out to $9.99 per month.  For a year, the 36% saving works things out to $8.25 per month.

They are certainly not a bargain, but for the level of service that they provide, Buffered are far from expensive.  They also offer a 30-day money back guarantee if you aren't completely sure.  There are no questions asked, so there are no risks to you if you find out that their product isn't what you are looking for.

They only accept two payment methods, PayPal and credit card, so unfortunately no Bitcoin for those who want to keep their contact information to themselves.

Customer Support

Buffered's support includes 55 troubleshooting articles and 12 tutorials.  The information available is well written and very helpful.  It will guide most users through everyday problems.  If you are having more significant issues, you might need to use their ticket support.

They usually respond within two hours, with replies that are detailed and courteous.  At this stage, they unfortunately, don't offer live chat.

Privacy and Security

Security is the number one priority for Buffered.  Because of this, they focus only on OpenVPN and don't offer PPTP and L2TP, because they have been shown to be insecure. For those using older devices, this might be a problem because some aren't compatible with OpenVPN, but for everyone else, it's a good thing.

Another great aspect of their service is that they use shared IPs, so even if there is a takedown request, they can't find the user.

Setting Up

Signing Up

To sign up, you'll need the standard email, password and credit card details.  Unfortunately, the lack of Bitcoin payments mean that you can't be truly anonymous is your payment.

The Buffered Windows client is super easy to use, but there aren't exactly a whole lot of extras or advanced options.  It's very clean looking and functional, all you have to do is click on a flag and you will be connected to a server in that country.

We tested out the speeds and here's what we got:

Download Speed (Mb/s)29.828.1
Upload Speed (Mb/s)32.1

As you can see, the speeds are pretty phenomenal, outperforming many of their competitors.  The DNS leak test and IP test also passed with flying colours.

Other Platforms

There are also clients available for Mac and Linux.  They are just as simple to use and offer a reasonable user experience.  Buffered also provide the .ovpn configuration file,  so you can use the client on any compatible device.  It might be a problem if you are using an older Android device, but everything else works fine.

Our Verdict

Buffered don't mess around.  They are truly one of the innovators in the game and I think we are going to see a lot more from them in the future.  They offer great speeds at a reasonable price.  They also offer great security and don't hold on to much that would affect your privacy.

One big problem is that they don't accept Bitcoin and their support isn't quite up there with a lot of their competitors.
