ITV is one of the most popular broadcasters in the UK, home to TV shows such as The X Factor, Family Guy, and Coronation Street.

Even many of England’s football matches are shown on ITV, so having access to it is important for those that follow the England Football team, you poor souls.

In recent years, ITV has gone from strength to strength, it was the most watched TV channel in the UK for a number of years, this shows it’s clout in the UK television market.

ITV isn’t resting on their laurels as they have been picking off bits and pieces from the BBC due to spending cuts.

Family Guy and American Dad, for example, used to be staples of BBC Three’s late-night programming, but ITV has now swooped in.

ITV may not have the same worldwide appeal as the BBC but it’s international profile is certainly rising, so many have been asking, how to watch ITV in USA?

What you will need

There are two methods to watch ITV in USA. You can go with either a VPN or use Smart DNS.

VPN Method

  • VPN provider with UK servers
  • PC or Smart Device with VPN support

Smart DNS Method

  • Smart DNS provider (that states they unblock ITV)
  • PC or Smart Device

With a VPN, you get total security in regards to your internet communications, all of your data will be encrypted but this will affect your internet speed. You also have to take into account how far away from a UK server you are, as this will also affect your bandwidth.

VPNs don’t have the widest device support, many internet capable devices don’t support native VPN connections, devices like Smart TVs for example.

Smart DNS doesn’t give you any sort of encryption so your data isn’t secured.

With Smart DNS though, your internet speed isn’t affected, making streaming a smooth experience. It is also supported on pretty much all internet gadgets that allow you to change your internet connection DNS settings.

VPN Method

Step one –  Find a VPN provider

There are a number of VPN providers out there that offer UK servers, it is just a matter of finding which one is best for you.

Here are three options we're fond of:

ExpressVPN

IPVanish

CactusVPN

If you are on a budget, CactusVPN is a fantastic choice. At just $5 a month for five UK servers it is a steal. They even offer a package that includes VPN (with servers in seven different countries) and Smart DNS (which unblocks ITV) so you can kill two birds with one stone.

Just because CactusVPN is cheap doesn’t mean the quality is poor, CactusVPN offer PPTP, L2TP, SSTP, OpenVPN, and even SoftEther. So, you get plenty of choices as to which suits you best. They also have their own PC, Android, and iOS apps that offer features such as a Kill-Switch. For the money CactusVPN is a fantastic choice.

If you decide to go with another or already are subscribed to a VPN service. All you need to get started is to make sure they offer servers located in the UK.

Step two – Connect to a UK VPN server

Now that you have chosen your VPN provider you need to connect a UK VPN server.

If your VPN provider offers their own software, feel free to use it. All you need to do is login and choose whichever protocol you want and connect to a UK VPN server. This is the easiest way to go about it on mobile as well.

If you want to setup your VPN connection yourself, the process isn’t too difficult depending on which protocol you wish to use. PPTP, L2TP, and SSTP are natively supported within Windows. All you have to do is setup a new network connection and choose “Connect to a Workplace” and set up your VPN through that setup wizard.

If you want to use OpenVPN, it requires you to download their software. Setting up OpenVPN requires the use of “.ovpn” profiles that can usually be downloaded from your VPN provider and then placed in the “config” folder within your OpenVPN installation.

It is a similar story with mobile devices, download the OpenVPN app and then put the config file on your phone and point to it from within the OpenVPN app when it asks for a profile to use for connecting.

As you can see the OpenVPN method is a little trickier than others, so it is probably better left to more experienced users.

Step three – Create an ITV account

To watch ITV, you need to create an ITV account. This requires a UK postcode, go to this website to generate a random one to use.

Fill in all of the fields to create your account and then click the link in the confirmation email you receive (so make sure to use a valid email address). Once this is done, your ITV account is good to go.

Step four – Enjoy ITV!

Now simply log into your ITV account and you are free to enjoy all that ITV has to offer.

Smart DNS Method

Step one – Find a Smart DNS service that unblocks ITV

First you need to find a Smart DNS service that unblocks ITV so you can enjoy all it has to offer. SmartDNSProxy is a good choice. It is one of the biggest Smart DNS providers out there right now and it is most certainly reliable. It costs just $4.90 a month so it doesn’t break the bank.

As mentioned above CactusVPN is just $5 a month and is similarly reliable. They offer a VPN and Smart DNS package at just $7 a month so that extra two dollars goes a really long way in terms of added value. For those not interested, their Smart DNS service is one of the best currently available.

Step two – Configure Smart DNS

Many Smart DNS services have their own app, go ahead and use them if you aren’t too confident in your ability to set it up manually.

Manually all it takes is to replace your current internet connections DNS values with the ones given to you by your Smart DNS provider.

Step three – Make an ITV Account

To watch ITV online you need to make an ITV account. This is a simple process, all you will need is a UK postcode to use. Go here to generate a random one for use with the sign-up process.

Step four – Have fun with ITV!

Once you have created and logged into your ITV Account you are free to watch ITV in USA.
